Interesting piece. The trends for how each core technology - fixed line, mobile phone, etc. - are emerging seem to be true. It would be - or will be - simpler when there is more widespread cultural agreement on the primary and best purposes for each channel. How long will that take? That different types of communication are sorting themselves out for best-channel protocols also seems to track with a piece I read in Wired about how this next gen of the Internet is no longer really about connecting people -- but helping us to sort each other out, connecting in ever finer degrees of micro-sort. Which could be a good or bad thing - and likely both. Given the sheer volume in the channel, it seems for now essential to know who and how to tune out.
