Second Life by the dollars

How much does life cost in a synthetic world? Here a few figures about Second Life (see previous post for a backgrounder). I'm borrowing some of them from Georg Pagenstedt - his blog is in German - and adding a couple of updates:

10 million USD -
The amount that IBM plans to invest in SL and in the development of its own 3D Intranet in the coming year. (I guess we may expect a v-business ad campaign sometimes soon)

652'581 USD - Real dollars spent in SL in the last 24 hours.

5215 USD - Cost of a 65'500 m2 island on SL and maintenance fees for one year.

60 USD - The Fizzdrake Castle (video), complete with towers, bridges, turrets, stained glass, a ballroom and dungeon - and incorporating roman ruins.

18,99 USD - Price of a real-life "metaverse" t-shirt.

9,95 USD - Monthly premium membership.

3 USD - The Trudeau Defender, a virtual yacht.

Padanatscionsl Just over 1 USD - Price of a virtual Toyota Scion car (the avatar in the picture is me visiting the SL Scion dealership).

Just over 1 USD - Price of a Naughty Faery outfit.

0,004 USD - Approximate price of 1 Linden dollar (250 L$ = 1 USD, but the exchange rate moves).

0 USD - Basic membership (you can go around, see things, chat with others, explore).

0 USD - The magic flying carpet - free.
